Living in Highland Park

Established in 1884, Highland Park is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Birmingham. Highland Avenue, which winds through the whole neighborhood, is reputed to be the most scenic and charming street in the city. Prior to the 1930's, street cars ran in both directions down Highland to the downtown Birmingham business district. Three parks are nestled into the curves of Highland Avenue - Caldwell, Rhodes and Rushton - and contribute to the charm of the neighborhood. Take in a round of golf at Highland Park Golf Course, hop around the parks with your pet, grab a coffee or meal at a local restaurant, or catch a show at the Virginia Samford Theatre. There are so many things to do and see in Highland Park, as well as the neighboring entertainment districts in 5 Points South and Lakeview. This is city living combined with the character of a truly historic residential neighborhood.

Highland Park has several parks to walk and exercise in and the Virginia-Samford Theater which regularly puts on shows.

The neighborhood, when compared to Avondale and 5 Points, is generally lower in the entertainment sector which is a tradeoff for the neighborhood's well-known quiet and tucked-away atmosphere.

Nearby is the Highland Park Golf Course, which is the oldest golf course in the state.

  • Neighborhood Lifestyle

While the neighborhood may not bring the most entertainment, it is known for being the most walkable neighborhood in the city. You will often see the sidewalks full of people and their pets going for afternoon walks or morning jogs.

The heart of Highland Park is located on the corner of Highland Avenue and Rushton park where locals will often be seen enjoying the atmosphere (and food) at Rojo or enjoying O'Henry's Coffee.
